EWOM and Ecosystems: LJ 9

I found this week's readings very intriguing, going to very good details about social media ecosystems and EWOM (electronic word of mouth). I had no idea what EWOM meant at first but it is just a Word of mouth or a kind of review. A review can be considered an EWOM or comments you see under a TikTok of someone explaining a product. Personally, I always use EWOM when buying a product, or trying to find something to watch. EWOM is especially useful and can keep people from blindly watching or purchasing something and being extremely disappointed. EWOM is greatly beneficial to both consumers and companies as well. According to Luca in Reviews, Reputation, and Revenue: The Case of Yelp.com, “A one-star increase can lead to a 5-9 percent increase in revenue for restaurants”. EWOM helps customers determine what they should and shouldn't get, as well as helping businesses gain customers. A small increase in positive EWOM can increase sales of products or views.   When it co...

Final Project

I have always needed to create a Linked-in account for the sake of my future. Planning on entering the professional career doesn’t require you to have one, but I know that it will only make things easier as time goes by and my time here at USF comes to a glorious end when I graduate. This class has introduced me to a couple of social media platforms that I have never thought about touching and taught me things that the average person would not know when it comes to social media. That being said, my experience creating and briefly using Linked-in seemed very familiar due to my combined use of social media already and the social media that I have used for this class. Like all social media accounts, I had to create an account to get started including my name, email, etc. Navigating Linked-In was a little overwhelming at first with a little too many tabs to click through. After getting used to navigating, completing the account set up was fairly easy...

Social media Communication: LJ 8

I have found this week’s reading to be very informative in its explanation in social media broadcasting and other industries. Social media broadcasting is something that I have been heavily involved in without even knowing. From going on Instagram profiles to watch clips from my favorite shows to browsing YouTube, I have my fair share of viewing the social media broadcasting. Social media broadcasting is the broadcasting of shows, music, and entertainment on social media platforms to get Viewers/Listeners more involved with their favorite industries. From the article social media and television from Wikipedia (2022), “ TV show producers are also releasing video clips from live TV, including promotional  trailers  and excerpts from shows on popular social media platforms, including  Facebook ,  Instagram, Twitter Snapchat in order to generate additional advertising revenue and increase Internet us...

Hands-On Assignment 4

Social media versus Healthcare: LJ 7

From the start of college I have decided that I wanted to do something in the medical field. The specific path that I have chosen was Public health with a concentration in Healthcare Information technology. Due to me pursuing a career related to the medical field, I have decided to read the articles that corresponded to Healthcare. While reading the articles, I have noticed that Social media has a bigger impact than I have previously thought and has also struck upon me that I can somewhat relate to the things the articles have discussed. In the article “Can social media have a positive impact on global healthcare”Arnold (2018) explained that “M illennials have stopped going to doctors visits and seeking guidance on social media”. At first I paid no mind to this but after reading about it, I have come to realize that I am also guilty of this fact. The article continued to explain that “the main reason why Individuals would rather seek help on a blog rather than pay a visit to the...

Propaganda Power: LJ6

Part 1:    This weeks reading has done a good job explaining how, if in the wrong hands, the internet and social media can be a powerful and dangerous resource. As explained in our textbook, "Social media communication" by Lipschultz, Jeremy Harris (2020), " Professor Gabrial Weinmann brought up a time where two Palestinians made videos. One with homemade explosives and the other explaining how to make a bomb" (p. 237).  Another instance that Lipschultz brought up in the reading was about how "Senator Joseph Lieberman Complained to google about the existence of YouTube videos posted by the terrorist groups, such as Al-Qaeda" (p.237). These exemplify how the freedom of social media and the internet have been misused and causes for ethical guidelines and laws. The United Kingdom have done a good job with trying to have guidelines and laws with the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) for prosecution of social media communication, which is an attempt at "bala...

Photos & Flickr: LJ 5

My past experience using Flickr before this weeks assignment was none. I have never used Flickr and I did not know much, if anything, about the app/website. I have never had a want or need to make a Flickr account, yet alone even go on it just to see what it had in store. I have an Instagram and to my previous knowledge, I thought Flickr was very similar to Instagram. The fact that I was ignorant to what Flickr had to offer and the difference between Instagram and Flickr led to the site not grabbing my attention. Throughout these past couple of days, learning and personally interacting with Flickr, I have see the huge difference between the two. Instagram is more of a social media through its use of pictures and videos. It is a place where your friends and family can interact with each other. Instagram is very similar to the goals of Flickr, but Instagram is more social media friendly, an app for anyone to use. The second I created a Flickr account for this assignme...

Tech Innovation- LJ4

I found this weeks reading very informative in explaining how social media apps make a profit. At this point in the world, the basics of social media is nothing new to us. As Lipschultz (2020) stated, "balancing the need to keep up and health concerns from living online are real (p.184).  Social media is the center point for most of our lives, spending hours on a single app just to see whats trending. Over the years social media has only grown bigger, which "lead to people investing in new technology that is increasingly connected to social media" (p. 185). The innovation of social media has opened doors for many people looking for entrepreneurship. Many social medias have offered a very convenient way for people to promote themselves or businesses. Instagram and Facebook are one of the main social medias that I know of that have dedicated areas on their apps for people promoting their businesses, with Facebook's market and Instagram's dedicated shop sectio...

Metrics and Analytics: LJ3

The readings from the past couple of weeks have created a totally new stand point in how I see social media, blogs, wikis, and how a basic web search can affects how we are viewed. My first thought of a wiki was the website Wikipedia. At first glance, I was confused on why we would want to learn about something our teachers/ professors always warned us about, only to find out that a wiki can be very useful in almost any situation involved with sharing information within a group of people. I found the past couple of readings very educating and in some cases entertaining. When I was first introduced to We are Date by Cheney-Lippold, J (2017), I would have never thought that an algorithm based off of what we have searched on the internet could determine what age, sex, and even ethnicity it thinks we are (p.8).     Not too far off from an algorithm that determines who we are from a search on the internet, Is how social media companies collect data from us and ...

We are Date: LJ2

After reading We Are Date Algorithms and the making of our digital selves by Cheney-Lippold (2017), I found myself not as concerned as I probably should be. According to Cheney-Lippold (2017), even if we search up something simple on the internet, that data can be used in algorithms to categorize us without our participation, and in most cases, our knowledge (p. 5). The algorithms used can determine anything about us, such as assuming gender and age (p. 8). The reason why I am not so concerned to what I could be considered to someone else as date is because I tend to keep my personal life off of social media and when I do search up things on the web, it is only what I need to search up.     Although I may not be too concerned with what an algorithm may have labeled me as, it does create more of an awareness for me to watch what I search up or go on. Even though I do not post on social media, or go on it that much, there will always be a thought in my mind as to be...

Hands-on Assignment 2

Image
Media and social networking are two separate things that go hand to hand with one another. After reviewing the course material I can say I have a better grasp on how to define both. Media is any form of information that is accessible to the public, such as news and sports. On the other hand Social networking is a place where people can socialize or link with one another through a network also called social media. Though both are different, they go hand and hand with each other, which is why they call it social media.     Currently, the social media that I use are Instagram, youtube, TikTok, Snapchat, and Facebook. I mainly use instagram for entertainment and information purposes. Instagram sometimes has entertaining videos on it, but information spreads quick on instagram. For just pure entertainment, I use snapchat and Tiktok for that. Both social media platforms offer a crazy amount of videos that my friends and other random people make, which can cure my bored...
